Inspiration

The original inspiration for FootTracker came from a discussion we had on our different household tasks. We realized that our unique practices caused varying levels of harm to the environment. Most of our team was only knowledgeable on certain topics related to our carbon footprint. By sharing our experiences and the different facts we knew, we were all able to learn how to live eco-friendlier lives. We wanted to share this information and allow others to also improve the sustainability of their lifestyles while understanding the full extent of their carbon footprint. This desire was what led to us developing FootTracker.

What it does

FootTracker provides users with information regarding the UN's SDG 12 as well as general statistics about the consumption of goods and waste production by everyday citizens. It provides helpful tips to users on how to lessen their carbon footprints through small changes to common practices. FootTracker provides a built-in calculator that allows users to determine their carbon footprint based on the information they provide. This data can be computed and gives site users an idea of what areas they should focus on improving.

How we built it

We started with the design process, creating a non-functioning version of FootTracker in Figma as a blueprint for our design, and later using HTML and CSS to build the base template of the website. Once we had the pages designed and created, we went back in with Javascript, Python, and Flask to add different functions, like the login system featured in the video.

Challenges we ran into

The majority of our group members had little to no experience with backend programming, so when going back in to add different features, we had to learn how to create the different functions. Through a lot of trial and error, we were able to figure it out, and we’re proud of our end product.

What's next for FootTracker

We intend to implement personalized tips for our users, as well as enhance our website's design so that it is consistent on all screen sizes.
