The current state of the world is far from inspiring. Sure, humanity has developed machine learning so advanced that we don't understand it, civilizations in the most deserted parts of the world, and rockets in space. We've expanded, grown, and conquered almost every part of the Earth. But what have we done for our planet other than just take from it? Just by looking around today, one can see the devastating effects of plastic pollution and our thoughtless actions. It's sickening. We wanted to create something that would be able to make a dent in this neglectful backlog of errors.
Our project incentives users to make an effort towards improving their impact on their environment. Daily tasks and long-term goals are assigned to users based on a selected preference (i.e., the change they'd like to make the most), and points are awarded to reward users upon completion of said tasks. The platform also provides a social aspect for users to engage, such as viewing what tasks other friends have completed. Tasks can range from simple tasks such as picking up litter to long-term goals like lifestyle changes.
We built Footprint in a Google Slides Presentation. Although unconventional, it has all the same functionalities as a "real" website. A major challenge we ran into was choosing our focus and narrowing down what values we wanted to prioritize. With such a broad topic, it's easy to get lost in the large variety of possibilities available. Additionally, building the website proved to be a challenge due to limitations from our choice of platform. We wanted to maximize user interactivity while also maintaining a concise website path.
Something we're proud of is the functionality of our website despite the fact that it's not a conventional website. Additionally, we're pleased with the progressive concept that our website is implemented on: anybody can make a change, no matter how small.
We learned how to thoroughly develop a website-focused business pitch.
The next step for Footprint is expanding our reach in order to partner with more sponsors. This will grant us more funding. With a larger participating audience and more funding, Footprint will be able to eventually accomplish its goal: a healthy planet.
