Inspiration
Footprint was inspired by how fragmented digital traces are scattered across the internet. Public data exists everywhere, but connecting it meaningfully requires time, expertise, and careful methodology. We wanted to build a system that could reconstruct digital trails responsibly, helping investigators and researchers see the bigger picture without invasive techniques.
What it does
Footprint is an OSINT intelligence platform that collects, correlates, and analyzes publicly available data to uncover hidden connections between people, events, and digital artifacts. It helps users map identities, timelines, and relationships while maintaining ethical boundaries and transparency.
How we built it
We built Footprint using a modular pipeline that ingests data from open sources, normalizes it, and links entities through graph-based analysis. Automated enrichment, keyword correlation, and timeline reconstruction allow users to move from isolated data points to structured intelligence efficiently.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was reducing noise while preserving signal. Open-source data is often incomplete, misleading, or outdated. Designing correlation logic that avoids false positives while remaining useful required careful validation and constraint-based linking.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a working OSINT correlation engine
- Successfully reconstructed complex digital trails from sparse data
- Designed an investigator-friendly workflow focused on clarity and traceability
- Maintained ethical OSINT principles without scraping private or restricted data
What we learned
We learned that OSINT is less about data volume and more about context. Small, well-linked signals are far more valuable than massive unstructured datasets. We also learned the importance of explainability in intelligence tools.
What's next for Footprint
Next, we plan to add richer graph visualizations, improve automated entity resolution, and introduce collaborative investigation features. Long term, Footprint aims to become a comprehensive digital trail analysis platform for security researchers, journalists, and analysts.
