Inspiration
I was inspired by watching videos on regular citizens finding out ways they could help out the environment and their community, whether it be through recycling or providing carpool services for members in their community. I felt that I wanted to create a website that allowed for transparency when it came to carbon footprints, while also allowing for people to check and see what goes into a carbon footprint. This can then be used by the individual to see how they can improve and use less carbon dioxide reliant resources.
What it does
The website is able to take user input, which is then used to calculate the carbon footprint of the individual. The calculations were based off of the recommendations of the UN, which recommends to view aspects such as air travel, car travel, and home energy bills in order to determine the carbon footprint. The website also gives users the opportunity to reach out to environmental groups that have been validated by footprint in the event that they want to volunteer.
How we built it
The website was built using CSS and HTML, and the functionality for the carbon footprint calculator was possible due to Javascript.
What's next for Footprint
The goal of footprint is for people around the world to know their carbon footprint as well as connect with leading members in the environmental community. There are plans to introduce a community feed as well as adding more parameters to the carbon footprint calculator in order to make sure that people can have all the information at their fingertips to help our planet.
