✅ Inspiration We live in a world where online actions can disappear in seconds but their impact can last for years. People can delete harmful posts, hide evidence of abuse, or scrub their public image while victims, communities, or employers struggle to verify the truth. We built Footprint to preserve public digital evidence so accountability can’t just vanish. It’s inspired by the need for digital receipts: protecting individuals, enabling ethical HR screening, and helping communities hold bad actors responsible.
✅ What it does Footprint is a privacy-conscious, crowdsourced platform where verified, anonymous contributors can submit links to publicly available posts, comments, or profiles. Once submitted:
Footprint scrapes the post and generates an archive preview (screenshot or HTML snapshot).
Stores a permanent, tamper-proof version even if the original is edited or deleted.
Makes it searchable for social research, HR checks, and digital abuse prevention.
Provides tools to dispute or appeal content if it’s inaccurate or misused.
✅ How we built it We combined:
A lightweight frontend for secure, anonymous submissions.
A scraper service that pulls metadata, screenshots, and embeds from supported platforms.
A storage layer that keeps archived posts, thumbnails, and hash proofs.
A public search portal where people and organizations can responsibly access footprints.
Optional NLP tools to tag or flag abusive, harmful, or high-risk content.
We focused on clear privacy boundaries: only public data, no tracking of submitters, and optional removal requests for legitimate claims.
✅ Challenges we ran into Designing a submission flow that verifies contributors without collecting personal info.
Building robust scrapers that adapt to multiple platforms’ constantly changing structures.
Balancing accountability with privacy — ensuring we don’t enable doxxing or misuse.
Legal considerations around archiving deleted posts while respecting copyright and fair use.
Preventing spam or malicious submissions without sacrificing anonymity.
✅ Accomplishments that we’re proud of Created a fully functional prototype that can archive posts from multiple platforms.
Designed an elegant workflow for anonymous but verified submissions.
Ensured all data stays within ethical and privacy guidelines.
Built a user-friendly search interface for real-world use cases (HR, journalists, anti-bullying orgs).
Sparked important discussions about digital accountability and consent.
✅ What we learned People do want tools to protect themselves and verify online behavior but they care deeply about how it’s done.
Anonymity is possible with thoughtful verification and moderation layers.
Archiving public digital footprints has legitimate uses but must be handled with clear safeguards.
Tech is only half the solution transparent community standards and fair appeals matter just as much.
✅ What’s next for Footprint Expand scraper support for more platforms.
Build robust moderation tools and fair removal workflows.
Launch an invite-only pilot for trusted HR teams, journalists, or researchers.
Explore decentralized storage for extra tamper resistance.
Engage policy advisors to ensure compliance with privacy and digital rights laws.
Partner with online safety orgs to help victims of harassment collect proof safely.
