Inspiration
We all love those old 8-bit football games, but they lack some of the realism say a competitor like Madden has. They don't use real-world data or player stats to allow the player to organize the perfect team. So we are trying to fix that.
What it does
We have yet to get a fully functional system, but the concept is that the user/player enters the game and is prompted with a field, and the sprite player scatters the football field. The player then can choose to pass in any direction or rush in any direction. The backend then would determine the outcome of that position based on the user's decision.
How we built it
We used pygame. As first-time coders, we decided to go with this platform since we were told that it was user-friendly and good at making GUI's for games. Since we were already doing the backend in python we figured this would be the perfect UI package. Anyway, for the backend, we used a data set that modeled around 10 years of football history, so, we modeled the average rushes, passes, etc. As well as, probabilities for fumbling, completing a pass, etc.
Challenges we ran into
Well, pygame was not as user-friendly as we were expecting. We got all the looks down and etc, though we were unable to make moving sprites populate the field. If we wanted to do this, a better way we realize would be through java. Unfortunately, we ran out of time and were not able to continue.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
To start our whole team is a bunch of crazy ambitious engineers, who at the start of the event had little to no coding experience. We taught ourselves a lot of pythons and definitely now have the knowledge of working in a team coding environment. This experience was a learning one for sure, and we had fun along the way!
What we learned
I touched on this previously, but we learned everything from the ground up. The most coding experience we had up until this point was MATLAB, C, and Arduino IDE. Unfortunately for us, this knowledge didn't transfer as well as we hoped. So most of our time was spent learning the ins and outs of the python language.
What's next for Foot Sim
Well, hopefully, we will be back next year to finish our idea and really flesh it out. After we get that all set, we would love the opportunity to make it more interactive, maybe make teams and players with there own unique stats and special plays. There is a lot that we can do with this idea, and I don't think we should stop here!
