Inspiration
In Canada, $31 billion worth of food ends up in landfills each year. For an average person, this means $100 worth of food per month. Research shows that Canadians are increasingly willing to sort their food waste, but a major pain point is the lack of information surrounding ambiguous items such as coffee cups. FOODR aims to mitigate this pain point by making it easy and quick to identify the best disposal method for each food.
What it does
The web interface is a chatbot where users can enter the waste and get information on whether it goes in the compost, recycling, or compost. The mobile interface is an Android/Apple application where in addition to the chatbot, users can take a photo of their waste to identify it and compete with others regarding the amount of food waste sorted.
How we built it
The web interface is built using HTML/CSS/JavaScript. The mobile interface is built using Sketch.
Challenges we ran into
For all of us, this was our first hackathon. All of us had very little programming experience, so we found it frustrating at first to be constantly correcting errors.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to tackle an issue that is relevant and has an impact on not only ourselves, but also many others.
What we learned
In addition to technical coding skills, we learned to work on a team and collaborate using our unique skillsets.
What's next for FOODY
In the future, adjustments will be made to the mobile interface to add details to the implementation.
