FoodWise Project Story
Inspiration
I was inspired to create FoodWise after noticing how much food gets wasted in homes and communities every day. I wanted to build a tool that helps people save food, make healthier choices, and understand the positive impact they can have on the planet. I wanted to turn food management into something fun and interactive, showing that small daily actions can make a big difference.
What it does
FoodWise allows users to:
- Track food items and their expiration dates
- See the impact of saved food in weight, cost, and carbon footprint
- Play a Healthy Food Game to learn about healthy and unhealthy foods
- Challenge themselves with a Tap Challenge
- Access practical tips to reduce waste and links to local food shelters
The app has a pulsing background and interactive elements that make every action rewarding while keeping text clear and readable.
How it was built
- Set up HTML structure for inputs, buttons, and display sections
- Styled the app with CSS using card layouts, colors, hover effects, and animations
- Used JavaScript to add, delete, and display food items dynamically
- Calculated days until expiration and estimated saved food impact
- Built the Healthy Food Game with random food items, scoring, and feedback.
- Added the Tap Challenge to count user taps and celebrate achievements
- Implemented a dark mode toggle while keeping text readable
- Tested and refined interactions to make the app smooth and fun
Challenges
- Keeping text visible on colorful, animated backgrounds
- Making animations smooth without slowing the app
- Balancing fun games with educational content
- Handling user interactions accurately
Accomplishments
- Created an interactive and enjoyable app for saving food
- Designed visual feedback that celebrates user actions
- Calculated real-world impact of saved food
- Combined education, games, and sustainability in a beginner project
- Learned ALOT of coding skills to create this within a short period of time
What I learned
- How to update the webpage dynamically with JavaScript
- How to work with dates and logical calculations
- How to create fun, educational games
- How to handle multiple user interactions
- How to balance design and functionality
- The importance of testing, problem-solving, and iteration
Next steps
- Add user profiles and progress tracking
- Introduce more nutrition and sustainability data
- Expand games with levels and challenges
- Include reminders for food about to expire
- Make FoodWise accessible to everyone, encouraging healthier choices and less food waste
