Inspiration

Drawing from my experience with AI research agents and Gemini integration, I was inspired to solve the massive problem of food waste and poor nutrition tracking. With 40% of food wasted globally and people struggling to eat healthy with their existing groceries, the Bolt one-shot prompt challenge was perfect for creating a comprehensive AI-powered kitchen companion that transforms how we manage food.

What it does

FoodWise is an AI-powered kitchen assistant that combines grocery inventory tracking, photo-based nutrition analysis, and smart recipe creation. Users scan groceries to build their inventory, snap photos of meals for instant calorie and nutrition tracking using Gemini AI, and get personalized recipe suggestions based on ingredients they already have. The app prevents food waste with expiry date alerts and helps users make healthier choices.

How we built it

Built entirely with Bolt.new in a single prompt session, leveraging my AI integration experience with Gemini and workflow development. The app uses React Native/PWA architecture with Gemini API for food recognition and nutrition analysis, smart inventory management with expiry tracking, and recipe generation algorithms. Clean, intuitive UI makes food management effortless and engaging.

Challenges we ran into

Food recognition accuracy required sophisticated prompt engineering for Gemini to identify complex dishes and ingredients. Nutrition calculation needed to account for portion sizes and cooking methods. Recipe generation had to balance available ingredients with dietary preferences, drawing on my planner agent development experience to create contextual recommendations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Created a comprehensive food ecosystem in a single Bolt session combining inventory management, AI nutrition tracking, and smart recipe creation. Successfully implemented complex food recognition pipelines using Gemini API. Achieved seamless user experience that makes healthy eating and food waste reduction effortless and rewarding.

What we learned

AI food recognition requires understanding of cultural cuisines and cooking methods. Nutrition tracking apps need to balance accuracy with user-friendly interfaces. Recipe recommendation systems must consider ingredient freshness, dietary restrictions, and user preferences simultaneously.
