The problem
Food insecurity is a huge problem, and so is food waste. But what if we could repurpose food waste to reduce food insecurity? In North America, over 40% of all food is wasted and thrown away. Many individuals may want to help donate food, but the average person may not have time in their day to go out of their way to donate to a food bank, especially with perishable foods.
Our mission
We want to provide a platform for those who are facing food insecurity to connect with those who have a surplus in food. Our project focuses on eliminating food waste while simultaneously targeting the problem of food insecurity. By allowing food banks, restaurants and individuals to create food listings and pick-up locations, we can expand the accessibility of food resources to those in-need. Donors can easily create a listing without physically going to a food bank to make a donation. Those who need food can easily search and find food resources to pick up.
How it works
Users can either create a listing with the food that they can provide, or look for existing listings nearby. Users can filter the search by distance, LGBTQ+ friendliness ratings, dietary restrictions, etc. A chat feature allows users to connect with providers and discuss logistics with pickups etc.
Who can create a listing?
- Food banks and centers who have resources
- Restaurants who have leftover food to be thrown away at the end of the day
- Individuals who have leftovers or extra groceries which they cannot finish before they expire or go bad
