Inspiration
We were inspired by the thought that many restaurants and cafes throw away food, while many people on the streets could've used that same food to survive. Our app aims to "close the loop" and connect those two entities for everyone's benefit :)
What it does
3 Main Goals for our website→ Reduce food insecurity & solve hunger Conserve resources & improve the environment Build a more closely bonded community
In order to effectively construct a nationwide communication network between restaurants and homeless people, we created a main feed where homeless shelters can browse through a list of local restaurants that meet their needs, in terms of the number of meals available and location. Upon finding a suitable restaurant, they can easily connect with them, through preferred contact info, to decide on an appropriate pick-up location.
How we built it
Frontend- vanilla HTML + CSS (no experience; everything was homemade :)) Backend - Flask + SQLAlchemy + PostgreSQL (little/no experience)
Challenges we ran into
Getting the feed to show; making sure data was properly stored; getting the friCKIN buttons to align
Accomplishments that we're proud of
the ui and the pretty colors, successful data storage, working demo!
What we learned
literally all the html/css in that project; how to make design decisions to meet deadlines
What's next for FoodShare
In the future, we hope to continue expanding the reach of our website and adding more functionalities to help improve the user experience, and further connecting homeless communities with businesses to pave the road towards our goal of zero food waste.
