Inspiration
The website we built for the SDhacks 2021 sustainability track is called FoodShare, with our theme being centered around combating food wastage. In the United States alone, food waste is estimated at between 30-40 percent of the food supply, costing more than $161 billion dollars annually. We felt that food wastage is an incredibly important part of sustainability; the production of wasted food in the United States is equivalent to the greenhouse emissions of 37 million cars.
What it does
FoodShare allows users to input their personal information, address, and food that they would like to donate. Users can also access a form of all the other foods that other users have donated, and using google maps API, find locations near them.
How we built it
The website was built using HTML, CSS, Javascript, Firebase cloud services, and Google Maps API.
Challenges we ran into
It was our first time building a website from scratch and using a cloud-based server and database to host and store the gathered data. We ran into a few walls when trying to integrate our HTML code with the firebase server, but with the help of mentors and tutorials, we were able to work through them.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Learning how to use firebase and other cloud-based services to host and store data.
What we learned
How to use HTML and CSS to format and build a website, and then using Firebase to host the website remotely. Storing form data and displaying it on a separate page in realtime. Integrating Google Maps API with our Cloud Firestore data.
What's next for FoodShare
Going forward, we hope to expand the scale of FoodShare, allowing easier communication between core industry components such as grocery stores, restaurants, and farmers. We hope to turn FoodShare into something educational and accessible, minimizing the damage food wastage has on the environment whilst contributing to society.
