Inspiration

With the soaring numbers of COVID cases, restaurants have seen a drastic drop in the number of sales. This ultimately affects the workers’ financial situation as many of them are laid off or restaurants may end up closing for good. To incentivize customers and increase the number of sales during these difficult times, many restaurants have started offering discounts in the form of combos or coupons. However, it is still difficult to attract new customers using this method due to the abundance of food blogs, food review sites, and restaurant sites.

What it does

FoodSearch is a website that combines data from restaurant websites, food blogs, and food review sites for you. From this data, it finds all nearby restaurants offering a discount so you can easily save money while supporting local restaurants.

How we built it

A prototype was first designed in Figma and used as a base to code the website using HTML/CSS. We also used a Geolocation API to get the user's location data to find nearby restaurants and a Yelp Fusion API to get the data of restaurants.

Challenges we ran into

The APIs took the most time to get to work. It was difficult to get the map to pin the correct location. Furthermore, having never worked with APIs previously and with a constrained time period, we were limited on the amount of restaurant data we could include.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We managed to work in a systematic way with each person performing their designated roles to the best of their ability. There was frequent communication making it easier to solve problems and avoid overlapping work. This was the first hackathon for all of us, so creating a working website with design fundamentals was a huge achievement.

What we learned

This is the first functional website that we have built. While some of us had worked with HTML/CSS previously, it had been a few months since we last used it; hence, a refresher was needed. It was also our first time incorporating APIs and more complex design fundamentals.

What's next for FoodSearch

To make the service more accessible, we want to create an app version of the website so people can easily use the service from their phones. We would also like to upgrade the service with more features, such as speech recognition for those who are visually impaired.
