Inspiration: Every year, households waste 40% of purchased food, contributing to 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. We wanted to create a practical solution that helps people reduce waste while making a real environmental impact.

What it does FoodSaver AI helps households reduce food waste through:

  • Smart Pantry Tracker: Track food items and get alerts before they expire
  • AI Recipe Generator: Get personalized recipes using ingredients about to spoil
  • Impact Dashboard: Visualize your environmental impact with real-time metrics (CO2 saved, food rescued, money saved)

How we built it

We used React for the frontend with vanilla CSS for styling, integrated OpenAI's API for intelligent recipe generation, and implemented local storage for data persistence. We focused on creating an intuitive, visually appealing interface with smooth animations and mobile responsiveness.

Challenges we faced

  • Building a comprehensive expiration date database for different food categories
  • Optimizing AI prompts to generate recipes that prioritize expiring ingredients
  • Balancing helpful notifications without overwhelming users

What we learned We discovered how to integrate AI APIs for real-world applications and the importance of gamification in driving sustainable behavior change.

What's next Mobile app development, barcode/receipt scanning with OCR, and community food-sharing features to scale the impact.
