Inspiration

We wanted to make some kind of app related to health, and, while brainstorming, we realized that many health apps only allow you to track your food or recommend foods that are mostly sponsored by the app itself. Our app will allow you to specifically target certain nutrient types and it recommends broad categories of food based on which nutrients you are trying to eat more of or less of.

What it does

Users sort a list of nutrients, ranking them from highest to lowest. Our app sorts various types of foods based on their nutrient composition and the user’s ranking, then returns the top 5 food types from each category of foods.

How we built it

We created python scripts for various functions, then converted them into a flutter app.

Challenges we faced

Limited data: The dataset we used provided information for broad categories of foods rather than specific food products. We wrote our code in a way that allows us to expand our app once we get more data. Data formatting: The dataset also had some formatting errors, with some entries missing and others using characters instead of integers. We replaced these values with 0s New language: We had little to no experience using flutter, so we had to learn a new language for this project. Ranking: We had to rank objects based on multiple categories. We implemented this by creating a score function that gave different weights based on how the user ranked the categories.

What's next for FoodRecommendify

The app-building process doesn’t stop here. We plan to improve on the design, add more data, add more categories and improve the scoring function. Lastly, we plan to add the ability to save plans, allowing users to personalize them to their needs to improve the user experience.
