Inspiration
I have been motivated by food waste and food insecurity for a while. In the past I was part of a food-waste podcast, and I love to create recipes from leftovers. This app is meant to make people feel like people - users will feel more comfortable if they can connect directly with who they are helping. Foodprint makes it easier for people to help and be helped, without the shame.
What it does
Foodprint is a community engagement platform that makes it easy to share - what you have too much of, and what you have not enough of. It operates somewhat like a social media app, and a bit like a marketplace, but feels local and comfortable, and emphasizes privacy.
How we built it
Lots of brainstorming, lots of discussion, and lots of AI.
Challenges we ran into
Removing features - it was difficult to decide which features were distracting, and where the real value was. We wanted to increase awareness on the full lifecycle of the food we eat, but we didn't want to distract from our focus of helping our immediate communities. We believe change starts wherever we are and we recognize the value of real face to face relationships.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of how we emphasized empathy and community engagement - we wanted to make a platform that felt sincere and comfortable, and we think we succeeded in doing that.
What we learned
We learned to focus on the needs of the people we want to help, and put aside our own wants. We learned how important proximity is to trust, and how important engagement is - we knew we needed to make something fun to use to keep people coming back.
What's next for Foodprint
We'd like to add more features for connecting in the community and for tracking food lifecycle. We want to figure out how exactly to incorporate this so that it adds and doesn't distract.
