Myriads of cases of poor Africans that are hungry and can hardly afford one square meal a day abound in the face of squalour and luxurious living characterised by food wastage among the privileged, institutions, restaurants etc in the continent. This state of affairs inspired this work.
What it does
The app appeals to the privileged class, institutions, restaurants, eateries etc. to place information on excess food in their wares on the platform so that charity organizations, and less privileged can access them.
How we built it
We built the app using XCode and Swift. We designed using Sketch.
Challenges we ran into
None of us knew how to code using Swift, and as Xcode isn't software built for collaboration, only one of us [Cherie] had to code while learning how to use it. We struggled with working effectively from different time zones.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Cherie: I am very proud to have learned a lot about Xcode and Swift in a weekend.
What we learned
We learned the basics of iOS mobile development and UI/UX design using Sketch. We also learned how to handle errors throughout the coding process. We now understand coding in Swift and mobile app development than we did before this hackathon.
What's next for FoodPing
We want to complete the basic features of the app and also build a version for Android devices and hopefully launch the app to help solve waste management and inaccessibility of food.
