Inspiration

During the last 18 months of the COVID-19 pandemic, we've seen how important it is for the world to come together as a global community to support each other. As our team really enjoys cooking, we are able to identify the appreciation for a culture that trying it's cuisine can give you. *We wanted to create a way for people of different cultures to learn about each other though the universal language of food. *

What it does

Foodovia is a chat-bot that communicates with the user to identify the food and culture that they want to learn about and then directs them to an informative page about that food or cuisine. This also directs them to recipes on how to make this dish. Our app is also accessible having included audio versions of all our informative pieces.

How we built it

We built Foodovia on primarily 2 platforms, Voiceform and Coda. We used Voiceform to build the chat-bot and then directed the chat-bot to our informative pages hosted on Coda.

Challenges we ran into

Having never used either platform between, our team had to learn a lot over the course of this weekend. A significant challenge we faced was in trying to integrate our Coda informative pages onto our Voiceform chat-bot.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're really proud of the extent to which we were able to build out informative pages. We aim to have popular dishes represented from each region one day and we felt that being able to do so for 5 beautiful and unique countries was really significant. To be able to write out 10 pages ~ 4500 words ~ of text in a few hours while being able to learn about various cuisines and cultures was really special to us.

What we learned

We learned so much about how to use platforms such as Voiceflow and Coda and intend to continue using them to further develop Foodovia and other projects. We also learned so much about the 5 countries we researched this weekend.

What's next for Foodovia

Foodovia aims to someday be a global database containing thousands of recipes from each country. We want to built out an app that brings the world closer together in a time where people are feeling disconnected. In terms of development, we plan on adding computer vision to our app so it is able to identify the dish a user inputs from their phone camera to eliminate the need from them to have prior knowledge of the dish.

Business Viability

Foodovia aims to be a low-maintenance site that becomes a part of people's daily lives. Foodovia would operate on a "freemium" model where majority of the app is free with the exclusion of recipe modifications and some premium recipes. Another source of revenue would be advertising on the site. Due to the low operational costs of Foodovia, we hope to remain focused on mission of bringing the world closer rather than maintaining the company.
