Inspiration
The inspiration for FoodMiles Naija came from real-world food transportation challenges in Nigeria, where agricultural produce is often moved across long distances. I was inspired by cases where food items transported from the northern region spoiled during transit, leading to waste, financial loss for farmers, and environmental impact. This raised awareness about how far food travels and the need for more sustainable consumption.
What it does
FoodMiles Naija helps users understand the journey of their food from farm to plate. It visually presents food items and their estimated environmental impact based on how far they travel. Users can explore local vs imported foods and learn how food miles contribute to carbon emissions and sustainability challenges.
How we built it
The project was built using HTML and CSS. I used semantic HTML to structure the content and CSS Flexbox and Grid to design a responsive layout. The website includes the header, a hero section, a food tracker grid, an impact awareness section, a call-to-action section, and a footer. Media queries were used to make the design responsive across devices.
Challenges we ran into
One of the main challenges was designing a clean layout that clearly communicates the idea of food miles without overwhelming the user. Another challenge was balancing visual design with readability, especially when working with background images and ensuring text contrast. Making the layout responsive across different screen sizes also required multiple adjustments.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud of building a fully functional and responsive landing page that communicates a real-world sustainability issue in a simple and engaging way. I successfully translated an environmental concept into a visual experience that users can interact with and understand quickly.
What we learned
Through this project, I learned how to structure a multi-section landing page, improve my understanding of CSS Grid and Flexbox, and create responsive designs for different screen sizes. I also learned how design choices impact storytelling and user engagement.
What's next for FoodMiles Naija
Future improvements include adding an interactive food search system, integrating real-time food mileage calculations, expanding the food database, and possibly connecting the platform with local farming data to provide more accurate sustainability insights.
