Inspiration:

We wanted to create an impactful project that is centered around food security.

What it does

Interactive mobile app that has three activities/features to educate users about food security.

There are three features; food bank map, EchoAR/VR Portal with unity and food reminder feature.

  1. Food Bank Map Google Maps screen with points of various food banks in the GTA so that users can easily see resources nearby to them

  2. Food Reminder Feature Feature that allows users to add food items they've purchased, they record when the foods are about to expire and will remind them when it is about to expire to avoid food waste.

  3. EchoAR/VR Portal AR/VR experience via EchoAR that allows user to enter a portal and be transported into a rural Sudanese village that doesn't have much access to clean water and food/nutrition. Reminds the user that food security is a very prevalent issue in today's day and age.

How we built it

The app was developed in Flutter and Dart. We used the Google Maps API for the map feature, Material Icons for icons in the app, Figma to design the screens and EchoAR for the AR/VR experience.

Challenges we ran into

There were some technical hiccups, particularly with Unity and Flutter compatibility. It was our first time using Unity, and we had to download many different software components and packages to try and get the unity game to be integrated into the Flutter project, but in the end we ran out of time and were unable to integrate it into the app. Due to time constraints, the map feature was also a bit buggy and we ran out of time to implement the food reminder feature.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • We started off the project well and planned the project effectively.
  • Designed the UI effectively as a team.

What we learned

  • More preparation is needed for a large project
  • Setting more realistic expectations is required
  • Set aside time for trouble shooting and faulty software/hardware

What's next for Foodly

  • Further development (integration of all features and app screens into one app)
  • Research into Flutter/Mobile development
