Inspiration
FoodLoop started with a simple problem we experienced ourselves: having a fridge full of food but not knowing what to cook, forgetting ingredients until they expired, and sometimes buying things we already had.
At the same time, perfectly usable food is wasted every day while other people could benefit from it.
We realized that these problems are connected. People don't always need more food — they need better ways to see what they already have, use it at the right time, and share what they don't need.
That inspired us to create FoodLoop: a platform that turns food management into a continuous loop instead of letting food end up in the trash.
What it does
FoodLoop helps people reduce food waste through four connected features:
Manage: Add food using a barcode, photo, or manual entry and track expiry dates. Cook: Generate AI-powered recipes using ingredients already available, prioritizing food that is expiring soon. Share: List surplus food so individuals or businesses can offer it to others. Discover: Find shared food nearby through an interactive map and claim available listings.
The core idea is simple:
Manage → Cook → Share → Discover
Instead of simply warning users that food is about to expire, FoodLoop gives them an action they can take.
How we built it
We built FoodLoop as a full-stack application using Python, FastAPI, MongoDB, Vanilla JavaScript, Hugging Face models, Open Food Facts, Leaflet, and OpenStreetMap.
Our MVP focuses on four features that work together as one complete journey: inventory management, AI recipe generation, surplus sharing, and nearby food discovery.
For food management, users can add items through barcode scanning, photo/vision recognition, or manual entry. The AI recipe system uses the user's inventory and prioritizes ingredients that are closest to expiring.
For sharing and discovery, we created a location-based feed where both individuals and businesses can list surplus food and people can find available food nearby.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was connecting multiple technologies into one simple experience.
Food recognition, inventory tracking, AI recipe generation, database management, and location-based discovery all require different systems to work together.
We also had to make difficult decisions about scope. Our original vision included eight connected steps, but we focused the hackathon MVP on the four most important ones rather than building many incomplete features.
Another challenge was making AI genuinely useful. We didn't want to add AI just because it was popular. We wanted it to solve a specific problem: helping people use ingredients before they become waste.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we built a working end-to-end MVP rather than a concept or collection of disconnected features.
FoodLoop connects:
Food inventory → expiry awareness → AI recipes → surplus sharing → local discovery
We're especially proud of integrating AI with real-world food data and location services to create something that can potentially be useful beyond the hackathon.
We also designed the system around open infrastructure such as Open Food Facts and OpenStreetMap, giving us a foundation that can support expansion into different communities and regions.
What we learned
We learned that innovation isn't necessarily about creating the most complicated technology. It is about connecting technology to a problem people actually experience.
We also learned how important prioritization is during a hackathon. Instead of trying to finish every part of our larger vision, we focused on creating a strong core loop that we could actually demonstrate.
Most importantly, we learned that sustainability solutions need to be convenient. If reducing food waste feels like extra work, people may not consistently do it. FoodLoop is designed to make the sustainable choice easier by giving users practical actions based on what they already have.
What's next for FoodLoop
Our current MVP is only the beginning.
Next, we want to expand FoodLoop with:
Smart planning to help users avoid duplicate purchases. Community creation for recipes, tips, and sustainability content. Local connections that strengthen neighborhood food-sharing networks. Impact tracking so users can see how much food they have helped save. Campus and community pilots to test FoodLoop in real environments. Mobile applications with notifications for expiring food and nearby surplus. Business partnerships to connect local businesses with people who can use their surplus.
Our long-term goal is to make food waste reduction part of everyday life.
FoodLoop isn't just another recipe app. It's a system designed to keep food in the loop for as long as possible.
