About the project: Inspired by the challenges faced by the Children of Adam charity, we developed FoodLink, a tool to help redistribute surplus food from local cafes and businesses to food banks and soup kitchens. Our goal was to tackle both food waste and hunger in a sustainable, community-driven way.

Building the project, we focused on the need for efficient food distribution and the encouragement of student volunteers. We built a web application that connects local businesses with charities, allowing them to donate surplus food easily and track volunteer opportunities.

The biggest challenge was streamlining logistics, especially the storage and transport of donated goods. We also faced difficulties in ensuring reliable volunteer participation, especially during holidays. The solution was a combination of automated reminders and rewards for volunteers to keep them engaged.

Through this project, we learned a lot about developing a scalable tool that can adapt to the real-world needs of charities, from logistics to volunteer management. We’re proud that FoodLink offers a practical solution that not only reduces food waste but also supports vulnerable communities, enhancing their access to food and services.
