Inspiration

The amount of food that is wasted from not prioritizing cooking foods that are close to expiring.

What it does

It would be an extension of Samsung Family Hub app that connects to a smart fridge that keeps track of food inventory and also the expiration dates of food. Our program receives this information and focuses on the foods that are closer to expiring. It then uses the Spoonacular API to find recipes that use these more critical foods in them, and you can also add other ingredients to the search that you would prefer to eat that day. It also has a breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert option to find random recipes.

How we built it

We used Android Studio to create the app. It uses buttons and switches to go to different pages on the app.

Challenges we ran into

We couldn't download the Samsung Family Hub app onto our emulator so we had to somewhat recreate the other app inside of our app. We also had issues with creating new pages in the app and making sure the buttons did the correct things.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Learning to use a new program and learning more about programming in general. Also, it is a cool function that the recipe also takes into account where you are so it can see which type of cuisine you might prefer.

What we learned

We learned how to program an app more in-depth, and how to brainstorm and bounce ideas off of each other.

What's next for Foodle : Food Waste Eliminating Smart Fridge App

In future versions, it would be a part of the Samsung Family Hub app so it would have access to all of the fridge information. We also planned to include an option where you could specify how many people the meal would feed so you know you have enough ingredients. The design of the app would also be more pleasing and easy to use in the future.
