Inspiration
What inspired our team? The answer is too simple. Future. Have you ever thought of how much food do you throw away every single day? We're sure you have. An estimated 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted globally each year, one-third of all food produced for human consumption, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Sounds crazy, doesn't it? Our team cares about our planet and the environment as well. That's why we decided to fix the "food-waste" problem by starting to rationalize our own consumption philosophy with the help of Foodizzy mobile app.
What it does
Foodizzy is a tool for keeping track of countless shopping lists and reducing needless food waste. Integrating seamlessly into everyday life, Foodizzy will become your best friend and indispensable assistant on the way to a better, healthier, and well-organized life. Your shopping lists are automatically updated if you run out of the most popular items in the fridge or if you want to do a new recipe and lack some ingredients. You can also add a family member to make a meal plan for the following week and make sure that nobody will buy the same product twice. Hands are full, and you want to add something to the list? Just Google Assistant or Alexa what you want to do, and they will do it for you.
How we built it
Our development process consisted of several steps:
- Brainstorming the idea
- Requirements gathering
- Research
- UX methodologies
- UI Design
- Set up the Firebase and create needed data in the Firestore
- Develop Vue application
- Add connectivity to the Firebase
- Set up functions in the Google Cloud
- Create flow in VoiceFlow
Challenges we ran into
We faced several challenges during the development process. Firstly, one of our team members was working from a different timezone, and we had to establish our working process correctly, so everyone could work comfortably. Secondly, we had to catch everyone up to the tech stack we used, since we were coming from different tech backgrounds.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud of being able to collaborate and work effectively as a team despite the fact that almost all team members had different tech backgrounds, timezones and never participated in a hackathon remotely. Moreover, we managed to learn new technologies (Firebase, VoiceFlow etc.) and implement them successfully in our app.
What we learned
We got a chance to learn new tech and skills during working on this project:
- VoiceFlow
- Firebase & FireStore
- Google Cloud
- Effective Remote Collaboration Skills
What's next for Foodizzy
The potential of the app is enormous. We would like to work more on this project in order to make it more functional, usable, and useful for the users. We're planning to implement several features that may include weekly meal planning, keeping track of financial expenses, and products' expiry dates. We truly believe that this app can help millions of people all around the world to optimize their consumption habits, spend less money on groceries, and pay more attention to the environment and its problems.
