Inspiration
The idea for Foodio came from my wife, who wanted a simple, personal way to keep track of memorable meals and favorite restaurants. Inspired by her suggestion, I decided to build this app as a project for a hackathon, aiming to create a tool that would make it easy for anyone to privately log and reflect on their food experiences.
What it does
Foodio is a personal foodie journal app designed to help you track and remember your favorite dishes and restaurants. Users can log reviews for both dishes and restaurants, search their journal to quickly find past experiences, and receive recommendations for new places to try based on their review history. The app also integrates with Google Maps, allowing users to navigate directly to recommended spots.
How we built it
I started by outlining the core features and designing a user-friendly interface focused on ease of use. I built the app using modern mobile development frameworks, prioritizing a clean and intuitive experience. Key features include a searchable journal and integration with Google Maps for navigation.
Challenges we ran into
Integrating Google Maps presented technical challenges, particularly in making the transition from recommendation to navigation seamless. Balancing a rich feature set with a simple, intuitive design was also an ongoing challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I’m proud to have built a fully functional food journal app from the ground up for this hackathon. The ability to offer personalized restaurant recommendations and seamless integration with Google Maps are standout achievements.
What we learned
Through this project, I deepened my understanding of mobile app development and user experience design. I learned the importance of iterative testing, user feedback, and clear communication in building a product that truly meets user needs. The process also taught me valuable lessons about project planning and the technical challenges of integrating third-party APIs.
What's next for Foodio
Looking ahead, I plan to expand Foodio’s recommendation engine to offer even more personalized suggestions. I’d like to add features such as photo uploads for dishes, collaborative journals for small groups, and the ability to export or share reviews selectively. Gathering user feedback and iterating on the design will be key priorities as I continue to grow the app.
