Inspiration I love cooking and experimenting with new dishes, but I found myself bouncing between ChatGPT for ideas and various recipe apps to save what I liked. I wanted a single web tool that could both generate creative recipes on the fly and guide me step by step through the cooking process. That’s how Foodiny was born.
What it does AI Recipe Generator: Tell Foodiny what ingredients you have (or snap a quick photo), and it uses GPT-4 to craft tailored recipes in seconds.
AI-Supported Cooking Mode: Launch the cooking mode and chat with the AI as you cook—ask for timing adjustments, ingredient substitutions, or clarifications at any step.
Recipe Management: All generated recipes are saved in your personal library for easy browsing, rating, and sharing.
How we built it Front-end: A React web app with Redux for state management, ensuring a responsive experience
Back-end: Supabase <3
AI Integration:
OpenAI GPT-4 for generating recipe instructions.
ElevenLabs for high-quality text-to-speech guidance in cooking mode.
Challenges we ran into User Authentication: Configuring Supabase Auth with email/password and OAuth providers, plus secure session handling, was more difficult than expected.
API Coordination: Orchestrating calls between OpenAI (recipe generation) and ElevenLabs (voice synthesis) without introducing UI lag required custom queuing logic and aggressive caching.
Deadline Pressure: With the hackathon submission looming, we had to timebox advanced features and focus on delivering a polished core experience first.
Accomplishments that I am proud of Delivered a fully functional MVP as a non coder
Seamlessly integrated two AI services—GPT-4 for text and ElevenLabs for voice—into a unified, chat-driven cooking assistant.
Met the hackathon deadline despite complex auth and API challenges.
What I learned API Integration Best Practices: Deep diving into OpenAI and ElevenLabs SDKs taught us how to optimize prompts and TTS settings for the best user experience.
State Management at Scale: Using Redux in a real-world React app reinforced the value of predictable state flow and middleware for handling async calls.
What’s next for Foodiny Community Sharing: Enable users to upload, rate, and remix each other’s AI-generated recipes.
Grocery Sync: Auto-generate shopping lists and sync them with popular online supermarkets.
Personalized Recommendations: Implement machine-learned taste profiles that tailor recipe suggestions to individual preferences.
Multi-Lingual Support: Expand beyond English to serve a global cooking community.
