Inspiration
An estimated 1.3 billion tones of food is wasted globally each year, one-third of all food produced for human consumption, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. An estimated 43 billion pounds of food were wasted in US retail stores in 2010. This is particularly disconcerting given that in 2016, 12.3 percent of American households were food insecure. Most of the loss in retail operations is in perishables, including baked goods, produce, meat, seafood and prepared meals. The USDA estimates that supermarkets lose $15 billion annually in unsold fruit and vegetables alone. Unfortunately, wasteful practices in the retail industry are often viewed as good business strategies. Some of the main drivers for food loss at retail stores include: overstocked product displays, expectation of cosmetic perfection of fruits, vegetables and other foods, oversized packages, the availability of prepared food until closing, expired “sell by” dates, damaged goods, outdated seasonal items, over purchasing of unpopular foods and under staffing.
The aim of this app is to create a opportunity to avoid wasting away fresh food.
What it does
With Foodify it's easy to do good - and get good back.
Foodify gives restaurants and private people the opportunity to share food, and to make it available to pick up by others in the surrounded area. As a user, you may upload food, browse among available sharings and see the rewards available in your neighborhood. In return for sharing on Foodify, the user gets the opportunity to collect rewards published by nearby organisations and businesses working in the fields of education and knowledge.
How we built it
We built Foodify using ReactJs for the frontend and NodeJs for the backend. For the database we used MongoDB. For hosting and deployment we used Replit.
Challenges we ran into
Time zone difference as all four of us had different timezones
Accomplishments that we're proud of
The team we got and the project we made
What we learned
Managing and structure the time is key to success :)
What's next for Foodify
We'll try to improve Foodify further and more changes will be there in future. First step is further create all pages of the prototype, change the color to something more food-y like, and develop the database.
