Inspiration

We were brainstorming about problems in our community and thought about the many individuals with dietary restrictions that can make it difficult to choose a good place to eat. We realized that Google Maps or Yelp isn't the most effective at recognizing which restaurants are good choices for certain dietary restrictions, so we decided to create our own web application to more effectively search for where to eat. We believe that food is happiness, and this app helps make that happiness more accessible for everyone.

What it does

When you open the web application, you first create an account and choose your dietary restrictions. Then, you are directed to a map and a list that shows you where restaurants with those dietary restrictions are located and more important information about them such as rating and restaurant hours.

How we built it

We built it using React, Firebase Authentication, Firestore, and the Google Maps API.

Challenges we ran into

We had some difficulty implementing the Google Maps API in the backend and mapping the results from our API calls in the frontend.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of our idea, our UI/UX design, and how much functionality we were able to put into our website over the past 24 hours.

What we learned

We learned a lot from each other related to using React in more efficient ways, CSS styling, and how the backend connects to the frontend. We also got experience with using the Google Maps API.

What's next for Foodies

In the future, Foodies would support mobile use. We currently built it geared towards laptop and desktop use. Additionally, we would like for users to be able to change their preferences in the map view and be able to provide feedback to the developers about the app and to other users about the restaurants through post sections on each restaurant.
