Inspiration

Our inspiration behind developing this app as a team of freshman students was to contribute to health and nutrition science while creating something that could be easily accessible to everyone, including ourselves. We recognized the need for a more convenient and efficient way to access nutritional information about the food we consume, leading us to develop an app that utilizes image processing and proper connection of backend and frontend development. Our goal is to help individuals make informed decisions about their food choices and ultimately lead to a healthier lifestyle.

What it does

Our app revolutionizes the way users access nutritional information by utilizing cutting-edge food scanning technology. With just a simple picture taken using their phone camera, our app quickly identifies the ingredients and provides the detailed nutritional value of the food being consumed. The app categorizes food as healthy or unhealthy, making it easier for users to make informed decisions about their food choices. By providing quick and easy access to this information, our app empowers users to take control of their health and make better choices about what they eat.

How we built it

Our app was built using a combination of widely-used technologies and programming languages. We utilized the Google Cloud Vision API to recognize food objects, and the USDA API to obtain detailed nutritional information about the food being consumed. We then used a natural language processing model to summarize the healthiness and unhealthiness of the food, which was communicated to the user via a chatbot interface developed using Twilio. Finally, we developed an app using the cross-platform development framework Flutter that allows users to take pictures of their food, which is then analyzed by our app to provide detailed nutritional information and healthiness categorization. By leveraging these various technologies and tools, we were able to create an innovative and comprehensive solution to the problem of accessing nutritional information quickly and easily. Challenges We Ran Into

As we embarked on our project, we encountered several hurdles that added an exciting element to our journey. While we faced initial setbacks with Twilio that caused a temporary slowdown, we were able to channel our creativity and innovation to find effective solutions. Moreover, though one of our team members faced an unforeseen illness, we pulled together as a team and supported each other, making the experience even more rewarding. Ultimately, we successfully tackled the challenges of creating our own local API and deploying it on Heroku, a triumph that we are immensely proud of.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are thrilled to have accomplished so much during our second on-site hackathon, where we eagerly embraced the relatively new and exciting field of data science and image processing. The challenges we faced were significant, but we rose to the occasion, pushing ourselves to new heights and expanding our skill sets in the process. Through collaboration and perseverance, we overcame obstacles that initially seemed insurmountable, and emerged victorious. Our ability to keep it all together and work through any challenges that came our way is a testament to our dedication and passion for innovation. We are incredibly proud of what we achieved and excited to see what the future holds.

What we learned

Our experience during the hackathon was not only one of accomplishment but also one of learning and growth. We gained valuable knowledge by delving into the world of Twilio for the first time, expanding our understanding of how to use APIs with greater precision. In addition, we sharpened our programming language skills, including Python, JS, and Flutter, by putting them to the test in a practical setting.

What's next for SnapSnacks

We are excited about the future of SnapSnacks and the opportunities that lie ahead. One of our primary goals is to train our own model, which will enable us to take our image recognition and data processing capabilities to the next level. In addition, we are committed to improving our user interface and user experience, to ensure that our platform is both intuitive and engaging. Our ultimate aim is to deploy SnapSnacks on the app and play stores, making it freely accessible to anyone who wants to make informed and healthy dietary choices. To further enhance our platform, we want to explore partnerships with nutrition specialists, who can provide valuable insights and support in our ongoing efforts to make SnapSnacks a leading player in the world of nutrition and wellness.
