Inspiration
People are polluting the environment for their convenience. Most people aren’t aware of what is inside their fridge, leading to food waste and compulsive buying which is detrimental to the environment. We wanted to make a service that has a balance between eco-friendliness and convenience. Our application gives its users convenience by saving them time and money while being eco-friendly and reducing the amount of food wasted.
What it does
FoodiEco offers a fridge page that allows the user to have a full view of the items in their fridge, helping reduce food waste and impulse buying. There is also a recipe page that allows the user to save their own recipes to help with the organization of cooking. Moreover, there is a replacement page that informs the user of healthier and more eco-friendly replacements for certain ingredients.
How we built it
We mainly used python and Tkinter to build our application.
Challenges we ran into
Most of the challenges we ran into were technical. Our team didn’t run into any communication conflicts or time management difficulties as our team members already had harmony in collaboration. We mainly struggled with saving the page and user input data after exiting out of a page. Connectivity issues also hindered our project; since we have different people working in different areas, merging all the code together smoothly was quite challenging.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were able to make a functioning web application that benefits the world in a limited amount of time. Our time management was a great accomplishment that helped our team advance swiftly. Moreover, we had smooth collaboration and effective communication without any conflict. Overall, making this experience very fun, educative, and fulfilling; brought our team members closer together.
What we learned
Our group learnt many technical things during this process and improved our coding knowledge in aspects such as creating buttons and entries, learning Tkinter, and debugging programs. We also learned how to better cooperate with team members and integrate teamwork with discussion to produce a well-rounded project.
What's next for FoodiEco
We want to integrate a premium subscription and provide more green features such as introducing daily green habits into our application. We also want to make merchandise for FoodiEco, made with recycled materials to reduce waste. Lastly, a newsletter that includes weekly tips and healthy meals would also be the next step for FoodiEco.
