Inspiration

My family grew up loving food and trying out new places. Along with this, we love to travel and have visited many places in Europe and Asia. Unfortunately, we are also all vegetarian, and it became difficult in many restaurants that are not tourist-centered to understand what the menu said and order the right items for our dietary restrictions. Because of this, I decided to build Foodie in order to help improve accessibility of a tourist finding new places to eat in a foreign country! We want the experience of visiting a new country to be fun and not anxious, and Foodie aims to help that!

What it does

Foodie lets you build a profile based on your food restrictions and preferences, along with the country you are visiting and your preferred language. Then, you can take a photo of the menu you are in (or scan, if the menu is online) and have our technology convert the menu to a language you understand. We don't just stop there, we want to provide recommendations on the menu based on your preferences and restrictions. Even if you don't understand the food and what it means, we provide their ingredients and let you know what food on the menu you can eat. We also rank it by what you prefer! After this, when ordering, if you don't know how to communicate your order and restrictions to the waiter, we offer a way to add the food you want to your order, and build a request you can ask the waiter. Once you edit the pre-made request we made for you, you can click translate, and you will get the order to be spoken out loud in the language spoken in the country, along with a clarification of your restrictions. Through this, the entire experience of going to a restaurant in a foreign country and ordering food is made smoother and more accessible, despite what you speak.

How we built it

I used Figma mainly in order to build the design! I also researched into the Google Translate API in order to be able to do a translation of the picture, and used that API in order to translate for the demo. When the application is built, the same API will be used as a part of the app.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was using Figma and understanding how to build interactions within that. It was a new skill to learn, but was very beneficial.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am really proud of the concept and impact that this project brings! I also am really proud of the use of the Google Translate API.

What we learned

I learned a lot about design and building a product that impacts users, and what needs to go into that. I also learned a lot about incorporating feedback from others into the project.

What's next for Foodie

Foodie will soon be built into a functioning app, along with adding new features, like finding places that are geared towards your preferences and restrictions, and reviewing a restaurant on its accessibility for your language, for future customer use.
