🧠 About the Project: FoodGrade AI

🚀 Inspiration

Working in the back of house at Panda Express, I saw firsthand how food safety audits were outdated, stressful, and often rushed. Health inspections are critical—but the current systems rely on paper checklists, human memory, and last-minute prep. I thought: what if a kitchen could run self-audits, guided by AI, before the inspector ever walks in?

That’s where FoodGrade AI was born: a real-time, AI-powered food safety assistant that helps restaurant teams detect violations early and improve compliance—with no paperwork, no guessing, and no missed steps.

🛠️ What I Built

FoodGrade AI is a mobile-first web app that transforms your phone camera into a live compliance tool. It lets users:

  • Video chat with an AI health inspector avatar
  • Scan the kitchen using the camera to detect food safety violations (e.g. improper food storage, dirty prep areas, unlabeled items)
  • Auto-generate audit reports based on detected issues
  • Guide users step-by-step through their store's compliance walkthrough
  • Blurred-to-clear UI reveal for a futuristic audit launch experience

The app is designed with Next.js, Tailwind CSS, and Bolt.new, built to be responsive, intuitive, and immersive.

📚 What I Learned

  • How to rapidly prototype a full-stack AI-driven app with limited tools
  • How to create intuitive UI/UX for high-stakes, real-world use cases
  • Real-world kitchen workflows and the pain points of food safety processes
  • Leveraging camera input + AI avatars to simulate live expert guidance

⚠️ Challenges I Faced

  • Simulating accurate AI vision detection in a short timeframe while maintaining real-time performance
  • Creating a fluid, mobile-first UI that still feels immersive and futuristic
  • Designing around low-latency video + AI avatar interaction without breaking UX
  • Balancing mocked AI logic with realistic kitchen demo flow

💡 What’s Next

FoodGrade AI is already being tested in my own store. The next step is integrating real detection models, onboarding new restaurant brands, and scaling to enterprise kitchens and third-party audit firms. This is just the beginning of intelligent food safety.
