FoodFindr
Inspiration
Deciding where to eat takes way too long. FoodFindr was built to solve that exact problem—turning endless restaurant options into a fast, swipeable experience. It’s like Tinder, but for food.
What it does
FoodFindr helps you decide what to eat by showing you one restaurant at a time. Swipe right if you’re down, left if you’re not. You’ll find a place to eat in seconds instead of minutes.
How I built it
Built using Expo for fast mobile development and smooth cross-platform performance. The app pulls real-time restaurant data using the Foursquare API (currently hardcoded) and turns it into a clean, swipeable interface. Designed mobile-first for speed and ease.
Challenges I ran into
Time was tight. Managing the API integration and setting up the database within the deadline was the biggest challenge. But it all came together in the end.
Accomplishments I'm proud of
- Built and shipped a working MVP on a short timeline
- Designed an intuitive and fun user flow that solves a real problem
- Created a polished mobile experience using Expo
- Turned restaurant discovery into something you actually want to do
What I learned
Fast iteration with Expo is a game changer. I learned how to build and test mobile-first UX quickly, and how to make external APIs work cleanly inside a React Native app. Also gained more experience in balancing design decisions under tight constraints.
What's next for FoodFindr
- More than just restaurants: explore cafes, food trucks, bars, and convenience stores
- Smarter filters: location, open hours, dietary options, price ranges
- Shared mode: swipe with a friend, match on common picks
- Save favorite spots and build your own food map
- Switch from hardcoded to dynamic API keys and backend for user data
- Potential integration with delivery or order-ahead services
FoodFindr is just the beginning of a faster, easier, and more fun way to explore food.
