Our Idea
Roughly one third or 1.3 billion tonnes of food produced for human consumption gets wasted each year., while thousands starve and the Earth's climate suffers from overproduction. We decided to make a small step in combating these issues with one simple app.
Our Solution
Foodetect gives you fun ideas for meals given the contents of your fridge. After short research, we split into two teams - backend and frontend. The backend team tackled the database fetching and recipe pulling from the web whereas the frontend team designed the app. We have plans for extensions, i.e. nutritional info inclusion, meal planning, prioritising vegeterian/vegan options, optimisation and even identification of food using phone camera and machine learning.
Our Process
After short research, we split into two teams - back-end and frontend. The back-end team tackled the database fetching and recipe pulling from the web using Python, whereas the frontend team designed the app. We also took inspiration from other similar apps on the App/Play store.
Our Challenges
Initially, finding a comprehensive food recipes dataset that contained ingredients for each recipe was quite challenging. However, each of us searched through the websites provided in the hackathon guide, and we finally found a dataset that had 230000+ recipes from Food.com. Another challenge we faced was combining the frontend and backend as one was done in Python while the other was done using Android Studio.
Our Future Plans for Improvement
We have plans for extensions, i.e. using nutritional info in meal planning, prioritising vegetarian/vegan options, optimization and even identification of food using phone camera and machine learning.
