Inspiration
Everyone in our group has had issues deciding where to eat, whether with friends, family, or significant others. We wanted to create a practical and convenient solution to this problem. Thus, we created Foodease, an application that helps you decide where to eat.
What it does
After inputting some general information about weather and party size, 3 food cuisines and dishes will be presented to you, the user. From there, you choose the one you prefer or want the most and Foodease will choose a well-rated establishment within your budget. Lastly, Foodease will show you the directions to your chosen food spot.
How we built it
We used the Create React App as the base of our application. To handle the information/parameter submission we used OpenAI's GPT API to choose 3 cuisines and dishes. The Pexelet API is used to retrieve relevant photos of the chosen cuisine. The Google Places API was used to find appropriate and well-rated establishments within this cuisine, and that fulfilled the budget requirement.
Challenges we ran into
We had difficulty with the API calls and being blocked from fetches. There were some annoying CSS styling issues which we ran into from time to time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created and completed a working application that utilizes 3 different APIs. We could see ourselves using this app, which is a testament to its relevance and effectiveness.
What we learned
We learned how to code in React and utilize APIs, particularly OpenAI's GPT and Google Places API.
What's next for Foodease
In the future, Foodease may be developed into a mobile app for easier use and accessibility. Login and account creation should be possible to create more helpful food choices.
