Inspiration

An eye for food, a heart for people Sometimes we go to restaurants and the food left behind is thrown away, once I gave that leftover food to a beggar outside and I still remember the smile on his face, then I thought that most people do the same, why not fill someone's stomach with this leftover food. And I am here with my idea of FoodDole.

What it does

The focus of this project is to reduce the amount of food wasted and being used to the needy people. I have developed a food donation platform wherein a person as a donar can donate her/his leftover food to poors and fill their stomach. The platform for food donation acts as an interface between the users who are looking for a channel to give the excess food without wasting it. It enables us to donate the excess food by notifying nearby users with the details of the food that is available. The Food Donation Project System is designed in such a way that the users have two options to select.

  1. If the user named Donor looking to donate food, login using username and password then fill the food details such as name of the food, type of the food and the excess quantity.
  2. If the user named Volunteer is claiming for the food, then she/he needs to enter the contact details of the organization that he belongs to with the address and unique id. The system is designed in the way that one or more users can donate the food. If there is more than one user to claim the food, the volunteers filter out the claimed food by using filters like date, time and location.

How we built it

Food Donation Project System

Sign-up and login: The user has to sign in with the name, email ID, contact number, and address.

Donating the surplus food: The user has to choose the activity if donating or claiming the surplus food. It is required to fill the contact address where the food is available.

Claiming the surplus food: If the user claims for the surplus food, need to specify the organization name with address and contact details.

Filtering the food: If one or more has claimed for food, the request is selected on the basis of filters.

Challenges we ran into

The food fresh time is an issue while building the project and we overcame this issue by applying time filter that will showcase only those food items which are in that time duration.

The Problem it solves?

According to the latest survey, 1.3 billion tons of food is thrown as waste every year. Additionally, one-third of the food consumed is stated as leftovers. Presently people who wish to donate items need to personally visit the organizations and donate foods or other items. Otherwise, they have to search for some websites to donate surplus food. In general, the large manufacturers, wholesalers, and organized community provide food items to food banks or waste tons of foods daily. They have to search for some organization that needs food. This process involves a lot of time to contact the organization to check the requirement. If they do not need the food, then the person has to contact another organization. This makes the donor tired and exhausted. Also there are many platforms available who ask for money for food donation for which many users are not ready, Indian users believe in donating surplus food instead of money, they believe donating food is trust worthier than money.

What we learned

This project was very helpful in showing how everything works together. When designing the website from scratch I spent a lot of time on how the individual section should function and where they should be in the data path. Implementing them wasn't to big of an issue, but when it came time to create the top level diagram and bring everything together, that was an entirely new experience. Debugging the entire model is quite the chore even when the individual element work on their own. Through the debugging process I learned a lot about timing and how it plays a large role on how certain elements take in values at certain times and parts. This project also taught me the importance of bootstrap. The last bit of knowledge that I gained from this project is the importance of time management. When it came time to create the final working site and bring everything together frontend and backend, a lot more time was needed that was not originally allocated. I am grateful to friends and parents for their support and help.

Conclusion

The surplus food can be donated easily. The visualization impact of the donation can create a positive impact on the users. Minimizing food wastage and feeding the hunger is the main goal of the food donation project. The platform is targeted in two ways, the user who is donating the food and the person/organization that is claiming the food.
