Inspiration

The idea for FoodConnect was born from a simple walk through our city's neighborhoods. We saw vibrant restaurants with bustling kitchens, and just a few streets away, community shelters working tirelessly to feed those in need. This disconnect is a local snapshot of a global crisis, the very one addressed by the UN's Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger. We were inspired to build a practical, local solution to contribute to this vital global mission, creating a dignified bridge between surplus and supper.

What it does

FoodConnect is a platform that transforms surplus food into a lifeline for the community. It’s a simple tool that makes doing good, easy.

  • For Donors (local restaurants, event hosts, families after gatherings): A 60-second solution to prevent waste. Simply open the app, describe the food, and set a pickup time. The platform instantly alerts the local network that a donation is available.

  • For Recipients (NGOs, shelters, community kitchens): A real-time window to food availability. Instead of making uncertain calls, they can see a map of nearby donations and claim what they need with a tap.

  • For Volunteers (our "Hunger Heroes"): A chance to be local champions. They receive alerts for pickups nearby, follow a guided route, and serve as the crucial link that turns a donation into a delivered meal.

In short, FoodConnect takes the guesswork out of food rescue, making the entire process visible, reliable, and efficient.

How we built it

We built FoodConnect as a robust, mobile-first web application, focusing on reliability and ease of use.

  • Technology: React/Next.js for a fast and responsive user experience, with Firebase powering secure logins and a real-time database.
  • Logistics & Mapping: Google Maps Platform integration for pinpointing donation locations, displaying nearby availability, and guiding volunteers with efficient delivery routes.
  • Smart Matching: An intelligent system that ensures donations are offered to the most suitable and nearest recipients, reducing waste and delivery time.

Challenges we ran into

Our biggest challenge wasn't technical—it was human. How do we make donating feel as easy as ordering a pizza? How do we build trust between strangers?

We focused on user experience, reducing the donation process to its essentials. A clear status tracker (Pending → Picked → Delivered) provided transparency and peace of mind, ensuring both donors and recipients felt confident at every step.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • The Impact Dashboard: Showcasing tangible metrics—such as "250 Meals Served" or "50kg of CO₂ Saved"—turns every action into visible impact.
  • Contributing to a Global Goal: Every meal delivered through FoodConnect supports UN Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger, turning global ambition into local action.

What we learned

We learned that for a community platform to succeed, technology must remain invisible. Users should not notice the complex backend; they should only feel the simplicity of making a difference.

We also discovered that the strongest motivator is not a plea for help but clear proof that actions have meaningful impact.

What's next for FoodConnect

Our mission is to weave FoodConnect into the fabric of the community. The future is not only about scaling but about strengthening connections.

  • Strengthening Community Ties: Introducing "Impact Stories" to highlight the journey of donations and celebrate partnerships between donors, volunteers, and recipients.
  • Building a Chain of Trust: Rolling out QR-based verifiable delivery systems to provide greater transparency for large-scale donors.
  • Expanding the Network: Partnering with local initiatives and food networks to position FoodConnect as the central platform for food rescue, with the vision to expand to other communities in the future.
