Inspiration
Every idle tycoon we've played follows the same formula: tap, upgrade, watch a number go up. They're satisfying but never ask the player to think. Meanwhile, deep supply-chain games like Factorio demand hours of attention, the opposite of mobile-friendly.
We asked: what if "cozy" and "deep" weren't opposites? The spark came from how real food businesses work, where a restaurant owner doesn't just cook. They worry about where bread comes from and whether it's cheaper to bake in-house or buy wholesale. That tension between convenience and control had never been captured in a mobile game. The interesting decisions in a tycoon game should live in the connections between businesses, not inside a single building.
What it does
Foodchain Tycoon is a cozy idle-management game where the player grows a food economy from a single restaurant to a vertically integrated supply chain of farms, factories, and dining venues. Two nested loops drive everything:
- Micro loop (minutes): Buy ingredients, cook, sell, upgrade. Customers walk in, queues build, dishes sell out.
- Macro loop (hours/days): A farm's wheat becomes a bakery's bread becomes a restaurant's burger. At every junction, the player chooses: sell now for quick cash, or route goods through their own chain for more profit at the cost of supply risk.
Neither loop is mandatory. A casual player runs one restaurant forever. An optimizer builds a three-link chain and obsesses over throughput. Same game but two valid experiences.
How we built it
We studied idle-tycoon hits (Hay Day) and automation games (Factorio), then prototyped the core loops on paper.
Challenges we ran into
- Balancing two audiences without the casual player feeling punished or the optimizer feeling gated.
- Spoilage without punishment. Inventory shrinks over time to motivate daily check-ins, but caps at a soft floor.
- Cutting features we loved. Prestige layers, rival businesses, multi-town expansion — all cut because v1's only job is to prove the core loop works.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- A complete pre-production package with Game Design Document, Player Journey Map, Visual Concept Package, and Production Plan.
What's next for Foodchain Tycoon
Build and validate the MVP: A playable single-restaurant prototype proving the micro loop is fun on its own.
