Inspiration

When we are away from home, we make food to nourish ourselves, bond with others, and remind ourselves of home. However, as college students, it is often hard to make cost-efficient, delicious one-person servings, for ingredients are cheaper in bulk and kitchen appliances require investment. At other moments in our lives, we gather to make food to celebrate a cultural event or a dear friend's birthday, and want to spread the joy with more people.

This year's theme, campfire, reminds us of warmth, community, and traditions; nothing combines them better than cooking. With FoodBuddy, we can make cooking more accessible for college students, nourishing ourselves and the community.

What it does

FoodBuddy is a phone app for college students to make, share, and connect over food. Users can see who's cooking right now and connect with them. They can share food and ingredients, borrow and buy appliances, and organize carpool trips for groceries. This is particularly helpful when their cooking asks for culturally specific or hard-to-find items.

In addition to solving practical challenges, FoodBuddy also provides a space for bonding. On the Community Page, users can post cooking events and share cooking hacks. All of these offerings and events can also be viewed on the interactive map.

How we built it

Since we are on the design track, we focused on ideation and UI/UX. We followed the process of brainstorming, building a wireframe, making a low-fidelity prototype, and then making a high-fidelity prototype.

Challenges we ran into

During our ideation process, we realized some of the functions we imagined overlapped with another existing project at Brown, Brown Bytes. Brown Bytes publishes information about free leftover food from campus events and facilitates meal credits transfer. This prompted us to refine the vision and features of FoodBuddy, which led us to build the app around community and connection.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are first-time hackers and we learned Figma on the fly. We are proud that we followed a comprehensive prototyping process within the time constraint. We are also proud of the aesthetics of the interface and its ease of navigation. What's next for FoodBuddy

Although we started imagining it to be for college students, FoodBuddy has the potential to be a more widely applicable app based on localities. We would also love to find developers that can realize this project with us.
