Inspiration

The journey of FoodBridge began with a simple realization: the paradox of hunger amidst plenty. Every day, tons of edible food are discarded, while a significant portion of our community goes to bed hungry. Determined to bridge this gap, we envisioned a mobile platform that could redirect surplus meals to where they're most needed, thereby tackling food waste and hunger in one go.

What It Does

FoodBridge connects individuals and businesses with excess food to those who need it. Through a simple interface, users can either offer or claim hot, ready-to-eat meals. The app serves dual purposes: it enables regular consumers and F&B businesses to become food heroes by sharing their surplus, and it empowers consumers and food banks to easily access these meals.

How We Built It

Leveraging the robust capabilities of Convex for our backend and harnessing the flexibility of Expo for cross-platform mobile development, we've crafted an intuitive and reliable app. We integrated several APIs, creating a seamless authentication process and an efficient location management system to ensure that the food reaches the right place at the right time.

Challenges We Ran Into

Embarking on this project, none of our team members had prior experience in mobile app development. Moreover, developing on Convex, which, while promising for our needs, was a new and unfamiliar technology to all of us. Thankfully, Convex's comprehensive documentation and the wealth of examples available were instrumental in our learning process, allowing us to overcome the steep learning curve. Despite these hurdles, our team remained undaunted, committed to our mission of reducing food waste through technology.

What We Learned

This project has been a journey of growth. We've not only sharpened our technical skills but also gained deeper insights into social entrepreneurship. The experience has taught us the power of technology in solving real-world problems and the importance of community engagement for sustainable change.

What's Next for FoodBridge

As FoodBridge gains traction, we're exploring partnerships with local businesses and nonprofits to expand our reach. We're also looking to incorporate more user feedback to enhance functionality and to implement advanced analytics to measure our impact more precisely.

Download the app and sign up. Post details of the surplus food you wish to donate, including quantity and pickup location. Get notified when someone claims your food and coordinate the exchange.

For Food Recipients

Browse available food donations in your vicinity. Claim the meal that suits your needs and coordinate pickup. Enjoy the meal and contribute to reducing food waste.
