Food waste is a pressing issue that impacts the US and the greater environment each year. Reducing food waste relates to each one of us, as it helps each person save money and fight habits that are destructive to our world. We designed a website that leads the user through a series of questions to identify areas of food waste and gauge their food waste level. Our website also directs users to a list of food waste resources depending on their answers to the series of questions. This provides the user with information about food waste so they can make informed decisions about our collective sustainability. We used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to build our website. Due to the variety of prior programming knowledge within our team, each team member learned a lot about front-end development and user interface. Specifically, we gained valuable experience in experimenting with user button interface and connecting the back-end programming with front-end. We are proud to have learned many things and create a functioning website that contributes to our collective sustainability. In the future, we want to improve the website's user interface and integrate a geocoding service from the Google Maps Platform to match the user with local composting resources. We also want the results of the quiz to show more data about the user's food waste, how it compares to others in their community, nation and the planet, and how much ecological and societal impact their food waste has. Additionally, we started integrating a shopping list for our website to guide our users towards sustainable habits that save money and combat the planet's greatest most pressing issues.
