Inspiration

About one-third of all the world's food goes to waste. Every government wants to cut back on food waste. Large quantities of food are also lost in harvesting, storage, and transportation. Food waste is not just a waste of money. It also wastes valuable resources like water, soil and energy. The United Nations wants to cut global food waste by 50% by the year 2030. This is one of the Sustainable Development Goals agreed by the UN. Due to current geo-political reason millions of people are displaced. There is high inflation and huge demand to feed hungry people.

What it does

A lot of food items sold by supermarkets gets expired daily basis and thrown away. Even though, they provide discount of those items, but people don’t know. So we are building this mobile app where various supermarkets will register food items which be expiring soon and there are discounts.

How we built it

We are leveraging Pega Mobile capability. App registration is done through OpenId connect using google as Identity provider which can be extended for other providers. We used Pega low code app as much as possible. An API has been created which will be provided to the supermarkets so that bulk food items can posted. An individual can download the app and start searching for the items. Food items can be added in a cart and then order be placed. A case will be created to complete the order process.

Challenges we ran into

We didn’t have much knowledge creating Pega mobile application. So, we learnt it and then implemented. We used Pega mobile preview app to develop and test.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Even though we want to add many more features which couldn’t do, but it was good collaboration without meeting in-person. We didn’t want to build a desktop application so diligently used mobile native features.
