Inspiration

Food waste, or what should be called wasted food, is the term used to define food that was not consumed for any reason and has been left to get wasted. It includes the leftover on plates, throwing the uneaten cooked food, peels of vegetables, the bit of inappropriately cooked food, spoiled food, unsold food, or any edible that was not consumed. Whenever the food doesn’t manage to complete its journey to the consumption phase, it is termed food waste.

What it does

Food waste management refers to the systematic approach and the strategies implemented to handle and redirect food and agricultural products for better purposes such as human consumption, animal feed, industrial application, and other environmental benefits.

How we built it food waste are needed now more than ever. Everyone can be a part of the solution to food waste, from large corporations to small communities. Innovators have explored food waste solutions in the science and technology industry, but there is still more that needs to be done.

Challenges we ran into

Food waste adversely impacts the economy, communities, and the environment by wasting the resources used to grow and transport it. Preventing food waste and keeping food and other organics out of landfills mitigates climate change, as an estimated 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from wasted food.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Supermarkets, restaurants and consumers are responsible for the majority of food waste in the U.S. and other developed countries. Grocery stores contribute to food waste by encouraging consumers to buy more than they need, overstocking shelves, inaccurately predicting shelf life or damaging products.

What we learned

The primary types of waste include organic waste, hazardous waste, solid waste, liquid waste, and recyclable waste. Each type uniquely impacts the environment, with improper disposal leading to issues like pollution, health risks, and resource depletion.

What's next for food waste

Recover food waste by connecting potential food donors to hunger relief organizations like food banks and pantries. Recycle food waste to feed animals or to create compost, bioenergy, and natural fertilizers.
