• One-third of the food in the world is wasted. And, the United States contributes one-fourth of the total food wasted. With new regulation (Commercial Organics Law) in 2021 January that bans food waste from commercials that generate more than 2 tons/ week, we tried to come up with a solution that helps environment and institutions (sources and receptors) for food waste management.

What it does

  • It provides information about the volume of food waste and nearby anaerobic digesters available that could help in converting food waste to energy.

How we built it

  • Using R-studio and the dashboard using R-shiny

Challenges we ran into

  • Trying to figure out which tool to use and then be able to build user-interface using applications.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • We were able to learn R, R- Studio and use it to analyze data related to our problem. We learnt to use R-shiny to build a user interface/dashbboard.

What's next for Food to energy

  • Predict food management strategies of each restaurant chain and supermarkets.
  • Encourage use of biofuel by increasing its production
  • Enable restaurants and supermarkets to collaborate with anaerobic digester plants.
