An app that connects people to stores/restaurants that need to get rid of their food waste

What it does

A food truck connects grocers or restaurants who want to minimize their food waste (also increase sustainability). The truck would advertise participating groups and resell/deliver food to food deserts. This is food that would otherwise be thrown out.

How we built it

We located local food deserts in NC to see how a food truck system could help increase food availability to food deserts.

Challenges we ran into

Who would benefit from this system? What incentives are available?

Accomplishments that we're proud of

What we learned

Food deserts are rare, the main issue is food swamps where the most convenient source of food is fast food/gas stations.

What's next??

Potential idea: composting. Make composting compulsory and introduce policies that fine people if they do not compost. Also, introduce composting to children from a young age, including it as a component of the educational system (in the same vein of reduce/reuse/recycle; it directly relates to life/earth science education, specifically with carbon). Additionally, we can incentivize composting and make it more accessible, again through education.
