It's easy to see what's happening in the dining room but it's hard to see what's going on in the kitchen. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in every 6 Americans gets sick from food contamination each year. Consumers usually lack the information to knowledgeably choose where to eat based on the risk of food contamination.

Boston restaurants are required by law to be inspected on an annual basis. However, food inspection data is typically available in rare and elusive online datasets. They are not like Yelp or Carfax; they are tedious.

Food Sherpa is a data visualization that seamlessly displays inspection results and grades for all Boston restaurants. These grades are presented in a report card format with an A through F scale. The quantity and severity of a restaurant’s five-year inspection history are used to assign the grades. This visualization can be used by any Boston restaurant-goer, to assist in making more informed decisions about where to eat out. Food Sherpa fills an integral gap in the awareness of restaurant consumers.
