Inspiration
During my final year, I became acutely aware of the staggering amount of food wasted daily in places like college canteens and hostels. At the same time, I saw many people in our community struggling with food insecurity.
The disconnect between surplus food and the needs of people inspired me to build FoodShare — a platform that bridges this gap, ensuring perfectly good food reaches those who need it instead of ending up in landfills.
What it does
FoodShare is a two-sided web application designed to combat food waste and alleviate food insecurity.
User Roles:
Food Providers (Donors)
Create an account and list surplus food with details like quantity, expiry date, and pickup address.
View incoming requests from receivers and accept/reject them with one click.
Food Receivers
Browse available food listings filtered by locality or expiry date.
Request items, get notified when accepted, and access integrated Google Maps directions for pickup.
Core Function: Facilitate the seamless redistribution of surplus food before it spoils.
How we built it
Frontend:
React.js with Tailwind CSS for a clean, responsive, and professional UI.
Modular components for faster development.
React Router for smooth client-side navigation.
Backend & Database:
Supabase for authentication, PostgreSQL database, and food image storage.
Enabled rapid development without heavy server infrastructure management.
Mapping:
Google Maps API for displaying listings and providing turn-by-turn pickup directions.
Version Control:
Managed with Git and hosted on GitHub.
Challenges I ran into
Scope Management: Initially planned real-time notifications for new food listings.
Due to time constraints, switched to a dashboard-based update system where users manually check for new activity.
UI/UX Design: Balancing beauty with usability, ensuring dashboards for providers and receivers were clear, distinct, and functional. Accomplishments that I’m proud of Impact-Driven Solution: Built a socially impactful tool addressing food waste and hunger.
*Professional UI/UX: * Created a polished, user-friendly interface. Full-Stack Implementation: Designed and developed the entire stack — from database and authentication to API integration and frontend.
What I learned
Deepened understanding of full-stack development with Supabase. Learned to manage scope and make tough feature trade-offs for timely delivery. Understood the importance of role-specific UX, ensuring different user types have tailored experiences.
