Inspiration

Our inspiration for FOOD FLOW - A Surplus Food Redistribution App stemmed from the stark contrast between the massive food waste problem and the persistent issue of hunger in our society. Witnessing the staggering amount of edible food discarded daily while many go to bed hungry inspired us to create a platform that bridges this gap using technology.

What it does

FOOD FLOW is a user-friendly application that empowers food providers to list surplus food items, while beneficiaries receive real-time notifications and match with available surplus food based on their preferences and locations. Users can then coordinate food pickup or delivery, fostering community collaboration

How we built it

Our journey began with research into food waste patterns and the needs of local communities. We then carefully selected our technology stack, opting for a user-centric approach:

Front-End: We used HTML/CSS and JavaScript, along with the React framework for the web app and React Native for the mobile app.

Back-End: Node.js and Express.js formed the core of our server, while PostgreSQL served as our relational database.

Authentication: Firebase Authentication was integrated to secure user data.

Mapping and Geolocation: We utilized the Google Maps API to help users find nearby donation centers and track deliveries.

Cloud Services: AWS served as our cloud hosting platform, while Amazon S3 stored media files.

Challenges we ran into

Our journey was marked by several challenges:

Data Privacy: Ensuring the security and privacy of user data was a constant concern, demanding rigorous security measures and regulatory compliance.

Behavior Change: Convincing individuals and businesses to shift their food disposal habits in favor of FOOD FLOW required effective marketing and community outreach.

Funding: Securing funding, especially in the project's infancy, was challenging. We relied on grants, donations, and strategic partnerships to sustain our operations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Since we are at a cradle stage of the project, we just built a fair prototype. However, we are confident enough to make a great social impact once the project gets launched.

What we learned

Our journey with FOOD FLOW has been an incredible learning experience. Key takeaways include:

Tech for Social Good: Technology can be harnessed as a powerful force for social change, addressing pressing issues such as food waste and hunger.

Data Responsibility: Handling sensitive user data comes with immense responsibility; data security and privacy must be paramount.

Community Building: Beyond technology, fostering a sense of community among users is essential for the success of a platform like FOOD FLOW.

What's next for FOOD FLOW

The journey with FOOD FLOW continues, and our vision is to create an impact:

Global Partnerships: We aim to establish partnerships with international organizations and businesses to combat food waste and hunger on a global scale.

Educational Initiatives: We're planning educational campaigns to raise awareness about food waste and hunger, inspiring more individuals and businesses to join our cause.

FOOD FLOW's journey is far from over, and we're excited about the positive impact we can bring to the world in the future.
