Inspiration
Every day, large amounts of perfectly usable food are left over from weddings, parties, restaurants, hotels, colleges, offices, and other events. At the same time, many people and communities struggle to access enough food. We were inspired by this gap and wanted to create a simple platform that connects surplus food with people who need it, before it becomes waste.
What it does
FoodRescue is a surplus-food donation platform that allows anyone with extra food to quickly post a donation with details such as food type, quantity, location, preparation time, and availability.
Verified NGOs can discover and claim available food, while volunteers can help with pickup and delivery. The platform also includes real-time food countdowns, emergency rescue alerts, smart NGO matching, split donations, pickup tracking, QR verification, and an impact dashboard.
Our goal is simple: make donating extra food as easy as posting it, and make rescuing food as fast as possible.
How we built it
We built FoodRescue as a full-stack web application using:
- Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Bootstrap
- Backend: Python Flask
- Database: MySQL
- Maps: Leaflet and OpenStreetMap
- Authentication: Role-based login with secure password hashing
The platform is divided into four main roles: Donors, NGOs, Volunteers, and Admins. Each role has its own dashboard and functionality.
The database stores users, food donations, claims, pickups, notifications, reviews, and impact information. The system manages the complete process from food donation → matching → claiming → pickup → delivery → completion.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was designing a system where food has a limited availability window. We needed to make sure that expired food could not be claimed.
Another challenge was handling partial donations. A donor might have 500 meals while one NGO only needs 100, so we designed the system to allow multiple NGOs to claim portions of the same donation.
We also had to think about NGO verification, preventing duplicate claims, tracking pickup status, calculating suitable matches, and keeping the platform simple enough for users to understand quickly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a platform that focuses on rescuing food in real time, rather than simply listing donations.
Our key features include:
- Real-time food availability countdown
- Emergency food rescue
- Smart NGO matching
- Split donations between multiple NGOs
- Location-based food discovery
- Volunteer pickup and delivery tracking
- QR-based pickup verification
- Food rescue impact dashboard
- Food Rescue Score and leaderboard
- Verified NGO system
Most importantly, FoodRescue connects the entire journey of surplus food from the donor to the person who needs it.
What we learned
We learned that building a social-impact platform requires more than just creating forms and dashboards. We had to think about real-world problems such as time sensitivity, trust, verification, logistics, location, food quantity, and user coordination.
We also learned how important it is to design a simple user experience. Someone with extra food should be able to post it within a few minutes, without complicated steps.
What's next for Food Rescue
Our next goal is to expand FoodRescue into a larger real-time food rescue network.
Future improvements include:
- More accurate location-based matching
- AI-assisted food quantity estimation
- Mobile application
- SMS, WhatsApp, and push notifications
- Advanced volunteer route optimization
- Partnerships with restaurants, hotels, caterers, and event organizers
- Advanced analytics for food waste reduction
- Environmental impact tracking
- Expansion to multiple cities and regions
Our long-term vision is to build a network where no usable surplus food is wasted simply because there was no quick way to find someone who needed it.
