Inspiration
Each time I witnessed huge quantities of food end up in the trash at events or restaurants, I was struck by how much good could be done if there existed an easy method for bridging this excess to the individuals who really need it. This is what motivated me to construct Food Rescue—a straightforward tool to bridge this gap and reduce food waste.
What it does
Food Rescue is a web application that allows donors to post excess food easily, and NGOs can see what's available locally. Offers automatically match with NGOs, show crucial information such as portions and freshness, estimate risk factors, and monitor delivery status from beginning to end. All users receive real-time notifications, so the entire rescue process is seamless and clear.
How we built it
I developed the app with emergent(for backend), base44(for frontend), and ChatGPT (for modifying the app), which offered quick, visual means of creating forms, dashboards, and match logic without coding. The automation and database features of the platform enabled quick creation of interactive, real-time workflows and a streamlined, modern user interface.
Challenges we encountered
- Developing a concise method to rate risk for every food donation.
- Weighing numerous new features without overwhelming the interface.
Things we're particularly proud of
- Real-time status updates and notifications did much to enhance reliability.
- Watching actual food rescues succeed through the app made all the effort worthwhile.
What we learned
- Low-tech solutions can make a significant difference when designed with the community in mind.
- No-code technologies are great for iterating, testing, and shipping fast.
- Real user feedback is crucial to creating a tool that genuinely fixes a problem.
What's next for Food Rescue
I would like to include volunteer management functionality, enhance the feedback mechanism, and enhance mobile notifications. Expansion of partnerships with more NGOs and expansion to other areas is in the pipeline, so that this easy solution can assist more individuals, prevent more food from being wasted, and combat food wastage on a larger level. We will include WhatsApp Business API integration for auto-messaging and real-time alerts to enhance communication among donors, NGOs, and volunteers.
